Laur for MAKRA N.1

What Marijoli jewellery inspire you?

More than organic shape it inspires me sensuality; the essential essence of femininity...

What do you do to reconnect within yourself (Zen moment) and where in Hong Kong you can find it?

Yoga and meditation help me to find my own balance.
Hong Kong: new in the city, I don't know yet all secrets of this megapolis and enjoying everyday to discover;
I love to make a stop in the temple at the end of  Hollywwod road.
The inside atmosphere makes a rupture/contrast with the city and immerse you in a peaceful world.

If you have to describe yourself and your professional background with two sentences what would that be?

I always had a strong determination on what I want to do and where I want to go.
This bring me to open my creative studio in the design field first in Paris, then in Japan in 2002, and now in Hong Kong. I like to observe then to trust my instinct to move on....

Diana for MAKRA N. 3

What Marijoli jewellery inspire you?

I love the Marijoli cuffs in silver. I like wearing them as a pair, one on each wrist. They look like something a mystical goddess would wear.

What do you do to reconnect within yourself (Zen moment) and where in Hong Kong you can find it?

I swim everyday to music. Being underwater to the music of Schubert is wonderful. I also ride horses in Clearwater Bay at an equestrian centre flanked by a country park on one side and the ocean on the other. It’s great reconnecting with nature. It doesn’t at all feel like you’re in HK and can forget all your stresses.

If you have to describe yourself and your professional background with two sentences what would that be?

I immerse myself in the worlds of art, fashion and creativity, meeting incredible and inspiring people around the world. Being a part of this makes me realize that there is so much beauty, so much to challenge, provoke, make you think and question.

Olivia for MAKRA N. 4

What do you think about this collection?

The Mabe bracelet - it was my first piece of Marijoli jewellery and it inspires me because of its obscurity.... Not one circular shape is the same making them all irregular... No one is perfect after all!

What do you do to reconnect within yourself (Zen moment) and where in Hong Kong you can find it?

My ultimate Zen moment has to be my pilates/gyrotonic sessions with Mandy at the Landmark Mandarin Spa... It is the only time I can block out all worries and stresses at once because she pushes me to such an extent all I can do is to put all my energy into mind body and soul...

If you have to describe yourself and your professional background with two sentences
what would that be?

As a Pisces, I am creative imaginative and able to adapt in different circumstances... All of which enable me to put my best efforts in to being a Fashion Stylist...

Gigi for MAKRA N. 5

What do you think about this collection?

I think this collection is very unique due to the reason that the design of each pendant is simple, organic yet elegant. pendants are a smart way of expressing your moods and emotions while being trendy and stylish. no matter if you're in a pair of ripped jeans and a t-shirt or something that's formal, somehow the pendant shows your real, unpretentious personality.

What was your professional career and private life?

I travel for music festivals and dj gigs from house to jazz.

What are the places that inspire you in Hong Kong?

The design of clubs in Hong Kong inspire me the most.

Divia for MAKRA N.6

What do you think about this collection?

Matreck and Maying bracelets – I love their organic shape and edgy design.

What do you do to reconnect within yourself (Zen moment) and where in Hong Kong you can find it?

It’s hard to relax in Hong Kong because there is always so much going – it’s the city that never sleeps! However visiting the flower market in Prince Edward always makes me happy because I can just forget everything and take in the beauty. I love the ocean too as it always calms me. But rather than spend my day on a crowded beach, I prefer to look at it from high above in the mountains such as Dragon’s Back etc. If all else fails, a good reflexology or spa session does the trick!

If you have to describe yourself and your professional
background with two sentences what would that be?

A free spirit who loves life, exploring the world and learning new things. With my work, I try delve into the minds of people who create and try to explain their message to the world.

The word chakra is a Sanskrit for wheel

Chakra symbols represent the circular centers of energy, and they correspond to the nerve plexuses and organs in the physical nervous system.
By focusing on these energy centers, and understanding the function of each, we are able to balance our energies, augment areas in our lives, and even facilitate healing.

Chakra practitioners spend years learning about the healing arts relating to these intricate energy centers.

Many individuals have chakra symbols embellished on clothing or keep these images near them in order to keep the attributes in their mind as they aspire to better balance and higher energy.

The idea was to develop 7 pendants related to 7 chakras by using relevant gem stones for each chakra.

The design is an interpretation from the original chakra into Marijoli’s  jewellery.

The serial of this 7 pieces was not to intend to create a healer pendant but it’s just an inspiration that I believe have the spirit of it!

sharing ideas with Octavio de la Roza

What a great and interesting meeting I had last Wednesday in
Lausanne at cafe Grancy with Octavio de la Roza.

Touched by the role of the Schizo dancer Natalie Portman's Black Swan I wanted to have a deeper understanding about the feeling of a "danseur étoile".  After a sip of expresso and a bit of magic passion's sharing we finally had to end our conversation as time was flying away.

Seems the episode is not finished and that we can share both passion translated into a jewel.

Piecco for MAKRA N. 7

What do you think about this collection?

I believe in building positivity. This collection somehow directs me to a positive way, I guess it's the flow of those wonderful pieces...

What was your professional career and private life?

I am a leather goods designer. As for my private life, I spend lots of time doing yoga, seeing family and friends. I'm also a huge fan of US sitcom, The Big Bang Theory.

What are the places that inspire you in Hong Kong?

I have to say the wet market. The odd part is I don't really cook but I believe the wet market truly touches our everyday lives and it's purely non-threatening, non-sexist, non-racist, non-classist!

Malentine

Is your husband skipping Valentine’s Day on Purpose...?
Well,... here is a protective pair of cufflinks called Malentine to make your beloved focus!

Cufflinks sterling silver rhodium plated with pink MOP
Mother of Pearl, which is abbreviated MOP, is the “Stone of Sincerity”. It signifies faith, charity, and innocence, and is believed to enhance personal integrity, and helps to provide focus to ones attention.
The pearl has been known as a “stone of sincerity”, bring truth to situations and loyalty to a “cause”. It has been used to inhibit boisterous behavior, and to provide a reflection of the self such that one may see the manner in which one appears to others.

This stone is a great protective stone.

Interview with Ahalife

Name: Marielle Byworth
Location: Hong Kong
Products: Elema bracelet and Matreck earrings

Marielle Byworth makes good use of her downtime. The Swiss-educated, Hong Kong-based designer came up with the idea for her Marijoli jewelry line while diving in the Maldives and Palau a few years ago. Fans of her nature-inspired pieces include Kate Moss and Madonna.

What inspired you to create this jewelry?
I had spent a lot of time diving in some beautiful spots like the Maldives and Palau and I became mesmerized by the beauty of nature. At the same time I was working with a jewelry maker to come up with some fresh designs and I really wanted to be able to replicate the beauty of the underwater world and have it with me at all times. A piece of jewelry was the perfect solution.

How were the pieces made?
The initial process started with the inspiration and working relationship above, from there I went to my Tokyo studio and started to draw designs. Once I was happy with the designs I made models in wax so I could play with the shapes. The next phase was to start talking with manufacturers. I then made a mold using the prototype that I had created. So many of my friends liked the model that I thought I would make some for gifts. Once I started to produce, more and more people started to buy and that’s how I went into production.

What was the big aha! you had while creating this product?
The moment I found the perfect shape and curve—it took a while.

Can you describe your creative process?
It’s kind of like a meditation process. I spend a lot of time focusing on a magical moment and focus on it the whole time when producing a piece.

What do you love about what you do?
That I can help people express themselves. I love seeing what people come up with. I worked with the Miss Universe Japan girls and they were very creative with how they wore the Elema piece—around a boot, covering a watch, around their necks. All extremely cool and saying something different. I particularly love seeing how proud people look when they are wearing my pieces.

How would you sum up your aesthetic/design philosophy?
Abstract minimalism with elegance and beauty that you can relate to.

What are you working on next?
I am working on a line for older people, children and parents using the power of healing stones

What would you like to do other than your current occupation?
I would like to broaden what I design to include a range of bags, belts and accessories.
